Western Gold Theatre presents A Doll’s House Part 2 from November 9 to 26 at the PAL Studio Theatre. Showtimes are at 7:30 pm from Wednesdays through Saturdays, and 2 pm on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Fifteen years after Nora Helmer infamously slammed the door on her stifling domestic life, there is a knock at that same door. Nora has returned—but the question of why needs answering, along with what it will mean for those she left behind.

Tony-nominated playwright Lucas Hnath’s bold play continues Nora’s story as she confronts her husband, daughter, and the nursemaid who raised her children. Hailed by the New York Times as “smart, funny, and utterly engrossing”, it is at once a continuation of Henrik Ibsen’s exploration of traditional gender roles, and a contemporary take on marriage and the complexities of human relationships.

“Working with a text of this calibre is a true gift for an emerging director,” says Seamus Fera, director of A Doll’s House Part 2, in a release. “Every syllable that Hnath uses is purposeful, and I am excited to explore the nuances and intricacies of each and every character. Ibsen’s A Doll’s House is known for the door shutting that was heard around the world, and I truly believe that this play is the door opening that will be heard around the world.”

Norwegian writer Ibsen’s three-act play A Doll’s House, first performed in 1879, tells the story of a marriage that collapses under a drama-tinged mix of financial struggles and gender inequality. On the 100-year anniversary of Ibsen’s death in 2006, A Doll’s House was the most-performed play globally, and it remains a staple of the theatre world today.

Melissa Oei plays the lead role of Nora, and Tom McBeath assumes the role of her husband, Torvald. The cast also features Tebo Nzeku as Emmy, and Tanja Dixon-Warren as Anne Marie.

The show’s creative team includes costume designer Barbara Clayden, set designer Emily Dotson, lighting designer Rebekah Johnson, and sound designer Peggy Lee.
