Prepare to be provoked as Western Gold Theatre presents award-winning British playwright Caryl Churchill’s highly charged and mesmerizing Here We Go from May 8 to 25 at the intimate PAL Studio Theatre.
As audiences witness a funeral party for a man with an adventurous past and a ginger cat that needs a home, questions arise: Where is the man now? Is his heart lighter than a feather? In the end, what is a life made up of? With a clever script characterized by absurdist humour, Here We Go proves a deeply moving contemplation of mortality.
“Here We Go speaks to both the joy and heartbreak of discovering, recognizing and coming to terms with the notion that the life path we are all on eventually reaches the same destination,” shares Tanja Dixon-Warren, artistic director of Western Gold Theatre, in a release. “It reminds us that we are here for a short time and then are suddenly gone.”
Kathryn Bracht, director of Here We Go, adds in the release that Churchill’s production is a “deceptively simple, 45-minute exploration on death and dying that is a surrealist meditation wrapped up in her crafty, clever dialogue. It’s such a pleasure to dive into Churchill’s play with a theatre company like Western Gold Theatre, which thrives on presenting challenging, engaging theatre with a wealth of talented, seasoned artists.”
Here We Go includes a cast of six actors: David Bloom, Bernard Cuffling, Rosy Frier-Dryden, Richard Newman, Kate Robbins, and Peihwen Tai. The creative team includes sound designer Torquil Campbell, costume designer Barbara Clayden, lighting designer John Webber, and set designer Glenn MacDonald (who also doubles as production manager).
Born in 1938 in London, Churchill is one of the world’s premier female playwrights. Her body of work spans over 30 stage and radio productions written across more than six decades. She is known for her theatrical explorations of feminist themes, sexual politics, and power abuse, among other subjects. Here We Go premiered at London’s National Theatre in November 2015.
