Salute to Vienna streams December 27 to January 3

FOR DECADES, Salute to Vienna has brought Vancouverites a little bit of the glittering Neujahrskonzert tradition—the legendary concert and ballroom dance spectacle hosted by Musikverein.

While you won’t be able to enjoy the Old World New Year’s Day ode to waltzes and the music of Johann Strauss and his contemporaries live and in-person at the Orpheum, the organizers are going to stream the festivities from Europe. Think dancers in elegant costumes performing everything from mazurkas to polkas, excerpts from classic operettas, and a full symphony, all building to the show highlight, Blue Danube Waltz.

The Neujahrskonzert tradition in Vienna traces all the way back to 1838, though the devotion to Strauss didn’t appear till after World War II. The concert has spread across Europe in its popularity, but it remains the biggest draw in the Austrian capital. There, the demand for tickets is so high that people have to register a year in advance, with some families passing down their access from generation to generation.

This year your family can join in on the action. For the streamed event, household tickets get you access to one of the three premiere streams on today, with access from December 28 to January 3,

Don’t forget to pop the champagne beforehand.
