Winter Jazz fest goes livestream from February 19 to 21
DJ Kookum, Sierra Baker, Gord Grdina Trio, and Alvaro Rojas among the names taking part
COASTAL JAZZ has announced it will go ahead with an online edition of Winter Jazz, livestreaming free performances from Performance Works on Granville Island.
Missy D, DJ Kookum, Sierra Baker, Gordon Grdina Trio, and the Jamie Lee Trio are some of the names taking part in the afternoon and evening broadcasts.
Presented with CMHC Granville Island, the online event takes place February 19 to 21, free of charge.
Indigenous DJ and videographer Kookum kicks off the opening-night performance with Squamish Nation, Coast Salish, Kwakwaka’wakw, Tlingit, Haida, and Hungarian designer, community consultant, entrepreneur, artist, and storyteller Baker at 8 pm, followed with a show by Missy D.
The next day at 12:30 pm, check out the Vancouver-based jazz piano trio led by drummer and composer Jamie Lee; later, the Bruno Herbert Trio with Brad Turner hits the airwaves at 3:45 pm. Well-known Vancouver oud/guitarist Grdina hits the Performance Works stage at 8 pm, with Tommy Babin on bass and Kenton Loewen on drums.
Alvaro Rojas’s new Gran Kasa shows its considerable stuff at 12:30 pm on February 21; the all-star lineup includes Meredith Bates on violin, Peggy Lee on cello, James Meger on bass, Chris Gestrin on keys, Sam Cartwright on drums, and Liam MacDonald on percussion in music that crosses freely between jazz and world music.
Local blues songstress Dalannah Gail Bowen wraps up the series at 3:45 pm the same day.
