Registration is open now for Arts Umbrella Dance’s acclaimed summer intensive programs, taking place at the organization’s newly opened, state-of the-art facility on Granville Island in July.

The intensives attract world-renowned teachers, choreographers, and repetiteurs, who join Arts Umbrella faculty in offering a dance experience that helps young artists reach their performance potential.

The classes at the education centre will take place in freshly outfitted, naturally-lit dance studios, complete with sprung floors.

The Junior Summer Dance Intensive is one of the few intensive summer programs for younger dancers, aged 8 to 12 (or grades 3 to 7) in Metro Vancouver. A minimum of two years’ dance experience is required. The classes span ballet, character, modern, repertoire and jazz, and students may register for one or two weeks: Week 1 runs July 5-9, Week 2 is July 12-16, and Week 3 is July 19-23.

Maiko Miyauchi, a graduate of the Ecole de Ballet Classic, Tokyo Junior Ballet and Goh Ballet Academy who combines ballet training with hip-hop and jazz, joins the junior intensive as a Guest Artist on the JSDI this year.

Meanwhile, the Teen Summer Dance Intensive’s five-day program is designed for teen dancers aged 12 and up (grade 7 and higher) seeking a high level of instruction. Featuring ballet, character, modern, repertoire, and jazz classes, the program helps dancers develop new skills and maintain fitness and flexibility. A minimum of two years’ dance experience is required, and students may register for one or two weeks: Week 1 runs July 5-9 and Week 2 is July 12-16.

Guest Artists on the teen program include Arts Umbrella grad Christoph von Riedemann, who danced with Ballet BC and joined GöteborgsOperan Danskompani in Sweden in 2019.

The program also features Megan Lawson, a choreographer, performer, and teacher who has worked with such prominent artists from Katy Perry and Madonna.

A number of Ballet BC artists will also lead classes this year. The junior program welcomes Kirsten Wicklund and Zenon Zubyk, alongside Emily Chessa, who recently moved on to Nederlands Dans Theater. Ballet BC’s Justin Rapaport features at the teen intensive.

Dance artists bringing their experience and expertise to the Arts Umbrella faculty include Sabra Perry, Katrina Cruikshank, Andrea Hodge, and Maddy Gilbert, all teaching the junior program. Faculty for the teen program include Livona Ellis, Kennedy Kraeling, and Jacq Smith.
