BALLET BC HAS announced the departure of executive director John Clark following a successful five-year tenure. The search for a new ED is to begin as soon as possible, with Clark remaining in his present position in the interim.

Having joined Ballet BC in March 2017, Clark is credited for developing the group’s subscriber base, elevating its international touring program, handling an artistic director transition with the welcome of Medhi Walerski, and realizing a new home on Granville Island, according to a release. His stewardship of Ballet BC’s finances also helped the company successfully navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Ballet BC’s reputation as one of the world’s top contemporary dance companies has continued to strengthen locally, nationally, and globally under John’s leadership,” Linda Brown, chair of the board, said in the release. “On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I thank him for his determination, commitment, and passion. Because of his contributions, the company is well-positioned to launch a search for a new leader who will continue to build on John’s accomplishments and bring a fresh perspective for the future.”

Ballet BC Artistic Director Medhi Walerski added: “It has been a pleasure to work with John over the past two seasons. He has been an exceptional support to Ballet BC and to me personally since joining the company. His guidance was instrumental as we navigated through the challenges of the pandemic and onto a hugely successful season marking our return to live performance. I thank John for his steadfast dedication to the company over the past five years, congratulate him on all he has accomplished, and wish him the best for his next chapter.”

The release made no mention of what Clark has planned for the future.

“It has been a joy and honour to help lead Ballet BC through some incredibly rewarding times, in addition to times of unforeseen challenge,” Clark said. “The organization is in an excellent place and entering an era of great opportunity under Medhi’s leadership, which also makes this an appropriate time for a new Executive Director. Ballet BC has been an inspiring and meaningful chapter in my career, and I look forward to seeing all that comes next for the company."
