Ballet BC prepares to move to new facility on Granville Island in former Arts Umbrella location
The company, currently housed in the Scotiabank Dance Centre, will have access to a greatly expanded space
BALLET BC IS moving to the old Arts Umbrella digs on Granville Island.
The facility at 1286 Cartwright Street offers a big increase in studio and administration space for the organization that has until now called the Scotiabank Dance Centre its home base.
Ballet BC will need to renovate the building, and plans to move in in summer 2022.
The move to the vibrant arts and culture hub will enable Ballet BC to continue to grow, further strengthening its ties to Arts Umbrella, which recently moved into its expanded state-of-the-art facility in the old Emily Carr University campus.
“We are delighted to have succeeded in securing this much needed space for Ballet BC,” Medhi Walerski, Ballet BC’s artistic director, said in the press announcement today. “It’s a transformative milestone for our company and the evolution of its vision and artistic goals.”
The company had spent more than a decade at Scotiabank Dance Centre. Ballet BC sees the move as an opportunity to increase its collaboration and synergy with other arts organizations and to allow the company to explore further ways to provide professional training opportunities, as well as boost its outreach an education initiatives.
