The BC Movement Arts Society is kicking off its second annual North Island Contemporary Dance Series with the OURO Collective from March 5 to 11.

Performances of the mixed program will be held at the Tidemark Theatre in Campbell River (March 5 at 7 pm), the Athletic Hall in Sointula (March 9 at 7:30 pm and March 10 at 2pm and 7:30 pm), and the ‘Namgis Lawrence Ambers Memorial Recreation Centre in Alert Bay (March 11 at 7:30 pm).

Formed in 2014, the Vancouver-based OURO Collective has a compelling style that fuses hip-hop, waacking, breaking, popping, and contemporary dance. Dancer-choreographers Rina Pelerin, Shana Wolfe, Eric Cheung, Ash Cornette, and Ganna Martynova will explore how changes in the urban landscape impact personal memory and cultural amnesia, and how an erased past affects future generations.

The BC Movement Arts Society is based in Sointula on Malcolm Island, B.C., located within the unceded Kwakwaka’wakw territories of the ‘Namgis, Kwakiutl, and Mamalilikala Nations. Known for featuring Canadian and international dance artists, the society’s North Island Contemporary Dance Series runs until September 30. This season welcomes diverse and acclaimed dance artists from British Columbia, Ontario, USA, Israel and Poland.

Tickets can be purchased through the Tidemark Theatre for the Campbell River show and through the BCMAS for the performances in Sointula and Alert Bay. For more information, see BCMAS.
