Vancouver-based chamber choir musica intima and Indigenous composer Andrew Balfour will present their fascinating collaboration Nagamo (which means “Sings” in Ojibway) at BlueShore at CapU on February 2 at 7:30 pm.

Nagamo is a concert of works by early-Baroque composers William Byrd, Henry Purcell, and Thomas Tallis that Balfour has reimagined in Cree and Ojibway. This groundbreaking 2022 Juno Award-nominated project reimagines the musical dialogue between Indigenous and European nations that began in the 17th century, exploring what might have happened with continued sonic sharing and cultural respect. The program will also feature original works by Balfour.

Of Cree descent, Balfour is an innovative composer, conductor, singer, and sound designer whose works have been commissioned by the Winnipeg, Regina, and Toronto Symphony Orchestras, Tafelmusik, and Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, among others. He specializes in creating “concept concerts”, many with Indigenous subject matter.

Tickets and more details are at BlueShore at CapU.
