When Vancouver guitarist Jared Burrows and the Italian pianist Carlo Morena lead their jazz quartet on October. 7 at 8 p.m., at BlueShore at CapU, fans can expect an evening of intimate chamber jazz with frequent excursions into swinging groove territory.
Burrows first met Morena, one of Italy’s foremost jazz pianists, in 2016, and the musical connection was instant. “We immediately realized we shared a similar approach to harmony and composition,” says Burrows.
The two have since played together a number of times and are always sharing music and musical ideas with each other, no matter where each other happens to be in the world.
Morena, an elegant and refined piano player with a classical music education, has lived and worked many years in Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Portugal, and Berlin as well as Rome and Milan in his home country. He’s performed and recorded with musicians such as Dave Liebman, Bob Mintzer, John Abercrombie, and Charlie Mariano.
Burrows leads the Jared Burrows Quartet, and Sextet, as well as the Vancouver Improviser's Orchestra. He is also involved with Thunder Lizard, Dave Robbins' Electric Band, Brad Muirhead 4tet, Colin MacDonald's Pocket Orchestra and other projects.
With Joe Poole on drums and Brent Gubbels on bass, the Burrows/Morena Quartet’s range of original and choice cover tunes will be played in solo, duo, trio and four-piece formats.
