Acclaimed clarinetist and UBC faculty member Jose Franch-Ballester and friends transport you to historic Argentine cabarets with a night of sultry tango music, dance, and words called Café Buenos Aires, October 1 at the Chan Shun Concert Hall.

The live show features classics by the likes of Horacio Salgán, Julián Plaza, and Mariano Mores, interwoven with scene-setting readings of Latin literary giants such as Borges and Neruda. It’s all set into electrifying motion by a pair of masterful dancers: Argentinian-born duo of Roxana and Fabian Belmonte, 30-year veterans of the international tango scene.

Franch-Ballester matches talents with violinist David Gillham, pianist Amanda Chan, guitarist Itamar Erez, and bassist Noah Reitman in the show.

The atmospheric concert highlights the “clarinetango” style, in which Franch-Ballester’s clarinet finds a playful partnership with the bandoneon of arranger Douglas Schmidt.

Fresh, authentic, and absorbing, Café Buenos Aires allows you to travel to another world at a time when travel is largely off-limits. Find tickets and more information here.
