Online cooking and a live East Van Panto as The Cultch unveils a hybrid fall season
The hyperlocal holiday tradition heads to Wonderland, plus new works by Touchstone Theatre and Amiel Gladstone
THE CULTCH has unveiled a mix of online and live programming for the rest of the year, including an East Van Panto that heads to Wonderland.
The venue made the announcement today as it prepares to kick off its TRANSFORM Cabaret Festival, produced with Urban Ink Theatre and running from tonight to October 2—online and with live screenings at the Historic Theatre.
The season continues November 3 to 7 with Ruby Slippers Theatre’s online performance of we the same. Performed and streamed live, it tells the true story of a mother of six separated from her family as she flees from Vietnam. It’s written by Sangeeta Wylie and directed by Diane Brown.
Next up, from November 17 to 21, is Farm to Fable, a new show from writer-director Amiel Gladstone that stars Meaghan Chenosky as a restaurateur trying to get back on her feet by hosting an online cooking show. It takes the form of an interactive Zoom event, encouraging audience members to join in and cook along with food from show partner Fresh Prep.
And Theatre Replacement’s cheeky holiday tradition East Van Panto makes a return to the York Theatre, as well as online—this time satirizing Alice in Wonderland. Running November 24 to January 2, it features a cast of Panto favourites: Mark Chavez, Dawn Petten, Amanda Sum, and Raugi Yu, as well as Ghazal Azarbad. This edition will be penned by Sonja Bennett (of the film Preggoland) and directed by Meg Roe, with Veda Hille back at the keyboards. Local references abound, as usual: Alice follows a White Rabbit onto the Skytrain and falls down a hole to the wonderland of Grandview-Woodlands—and things get even more warped from there.
Single tickets are on sale now through The Cultch’s Box Office at 604-251-1363 or thecultch.com.
