CREATE! Arts Festival heads outdoors to Woodland Park and several Eastside studios, August 21 and 22
Eastside Arts Society launches the art-making event with 40 visual-art workshops for the community and a public-participation art installation
CREATE! Arts Festival takes place at various outdoor venues August 21 and 22, presented by Eastside Arts Society.
If you’re seeking artistic inspiration this summer, look no further than CREATE! Arts Festival, the new public art-making event by Eastside Arts Society.
The annual initiative brings together the community and local artists through affordable and accessible workshops for adults and children along with a public-participation art installation.
Attendees can choose to dabble in a range of media, including jewellery, ceramics, printmaking, glass blowing, painting, and much more.
“With the Eastside Culture Crawl celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and continuing to grow in popularity, we increasingly hear from the public of their desire to explore the art-making process in a meaningful way directly with professional artists,” Esther Rausenberg, executive and artistic director of EAS, said in a statement. “For many of our Crawl attendees, they want to see more than just the completed work of art; they also want to experience how it’s made and seek to participate in the creative process themselves. The public’s curiosity has inspired us to develop a summer festival that offers unique and engaging opportunities to learn how to create art.”
On August 21, 11 artists will lead 40 art-making workshops at Woodland Park (705 Woodland Drive). Participating artists include Grace Lee (eikcam ceramics), Christine Moulson, Mat Holmstrom, Beata Kacy, Denise Wilson (Bronsino Leather), Krista Johnson, Haisla Collins, Naomi Yamamoto, Chantal Cardinal, Lori Goldberg, and Amberlie Perkin (Kids Workshop).
August 22 workshops will be hosted at several Eastside studios, including Terminal City Glass Co-op (1191 Parker Street); the Mergatroid Building (975 Vernon Drive) with Bruce Inglis and Edge City Woodworking; and Georgina Lohan Studio (1161 Parker Street).
The festival will feature a free community art installation on August 21, facilitated by artist Amy Walker, with a limited rotating capacity in alignment with COVID-19 protocols. Participants will get to create a piece of art based on their vision for the local community, with each artwork being added to the installation throughout the day.
Entry into CREATE! Arts Festival is limited to 10 registered participants per workshop due to safety protocols. Workshops are $25 for adults (16 and up) and $10 for kids (six and older).
Participation in the public art installation is free; capacity will be limited as per COVID guidelines.
The EAS is also hosting its popular Art! Bike! Beer! Crawl Fundraiser this summer and is embarking on planning for the Eastside Arts District.
