Ensemble Constantinople, Accademia del Piacere join musical forces
Their Early Music Vancouver concert takes listeners on a historical, musical journey through through Iberia, Persia, and Central Asia
Early Music Vancouver presents Castille to Samarkand by Ensemble Constantinople and Accademia del Piacere on April 1 at 7:30 pm at Kay Meek Arts Centre. The concert will stream for the subsequent 48 hours.
THE 15th and 16th centuries may be considered the “Golden Age of Spanish music”, but they also formed an era of exceptional musical artistry throughout the Ottoman Empire.
Castille to Samarkand presents some of the musical creations from the Spanish renaissance alongside Persian and Ottoman masterpieces sourced from manuscripts unearthed in monasteries and palace libraries, like Topkapi.
The concert is a collaboration of the Montreal-based Ensemble Constantinople, cofounded by esteemed Iranian-born musician Kiya Tabassian; and Fahmi Alqhai, a virtuoso of the viola da gamba, and his Accademia del Piacere, a leading early-Spanish music ensemble. Born in Seville, Alqhai is artistic director of the Early Music Festival of Seville, Spain’s oldest and most important early music fest.
