Elektra Women's Choir presents beloved holiday concert Chez Nous on November 26 and 27
Familiar carols meet Canadian compositions and two contrasting works from Berlin
Elektra Women’s Choir invites Vancouver and South Surrey audiences to rediscover the magic of the season with the return of Chez Nous: Christmas with Elektra.
Under the direction of artistic director Morna Edmundson, the celebrated 40-voice choir brings back a time-honoured tradition on the evening of November 26 at Pacific Spirit United Church (2205 West 45th Avenue), and November 27 in an afternoon performance at Good Shepherd Church (2250-150 Street, Surrey).
The concert welcomes the Christmas season with the rich sounds of choral music.
Joining the choir on stage this November is saxophonist Julia Nolan, bringing her talents to familiar carols such as Austria’s Still, Still, Still, and Shawn Kirchner’s stunning Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming. Canadian composers Kathryn Parotta, Don Macdonald, Larry Nickel, Erica Phare-Bergh, and Stephen Smith are represented with compositions ranging from a playful Spanish carol, Ríu, Ríu, Chíu to a flowing new secular piece, Winter Sun. Two Berlin-based composers, Christian Bährens and Winnie Brückner, offer contrasting works in flowing Latin phrases and spritely rhythms, respectively.
Elektra is one of Canada’s most celebrated choirs, with frequent airplay on CBC Music, 17 CDs, an extensive YouTube channel of choral recordings, and an international reputation for excellence. Recent projects have included the Canadian premiere of Shawn Kirchner’s The Light of Hope Returning, with original artwork by Kevork Mourad; the collaborative video project and musical premiere, Teachings of the Water; and, most recently, the world premiere of its largest commissioned work to date, The Lost Words: A Spell Book, based on the bestselling book by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris.
