Pop-up music series Funk N’ Mink unites jazzy soul and chocolate, September 11, 18, 25
The free outdoor concerts by the Kristin Fung Trio happen in downtown Vancouver outside Mink—A Chocolate Café
IF THE FOURTH wave has got you down, you might turn to music for comfort. Or maybe it’s chocolate. Funk N’ Mink puts the two together in a pandemic-friendly outdoor setting.
The new live-music series features the Kristin Fung Trio performing for free in the pedestrian plaza outside of Mink—A Chocolate Café (863 West Hastings Street) on September 11, 18, and 25 from 1 to 3 pm PDT.
Fung is a vocalist, keyboardist, and composer who has written R&B originals originals (“You For You”, “Straight to the Heart of It”, and “Transcontinental Crush”) and performed in live and recorded versions of Anthony Braxton’s experimental opera, Trillium J. You might have seen her at this year’s Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
A member of Braxton’s Tri-Centric Vocal Ensemble and Christine Duncan’s The Element Choir, Fung is also creator of the contemporary vocal/dance trio celeste and half of the ukulele duo K Funk and Lady Ree.
Fung’s trio consists of JeanSe Le Doujet on electric bass and Jay Esplana on drums.
During the group’s September performances, there will be free raffle giveaways, with prizes including a Mink Chocolate Bar Gift Box and a USB mixtape of tunes curated by Fung.
Mink specializes in artisan ganache bars and bonbons made with Cacao Barry chocolate.
Up until September 24, anyone who goes to Bandcamp.com to pick up one of Fung’s songs along with one by any artist of their choosing is eligible for a complementary Mink hot chocolate during the Funk N’ Mink shows.
The live-music series is happening through a Public Space Vibrancy Grant sponsored by the Downtown Vancouver BIA.
