Orfeo Ed Euridice, Gilbert & Sullivan, and Cavalleria Rusticana, as Vancouver Opera unveils live Queen Elizabeth Theatre season
An outdoor celebration, a contemporary-dance collaboration, and the return of maestro Jonathan Darlington
VANCOUVER OPERA has unveiled three live shows at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre for its 2021-22 season—an interdisciplinary collaboration, a concert of one of the most musically rich Italian operas ever written, and a rollicking Gilbert & Sullivan production.
It’s also announced two days of outdoor performances at the šxʷƛ̓exən Xwtl’a7shn (formerly QET Plaza) on September 18 and 19 from 1 to 4 p.m.
The season opens with Orfeo Ed Euridice, an inventive coproduction between the VO, the Dance Centre, and Ne.Sans Opera.
Running December 4 and 5, it stars Vancouver mezzo Mireille Lebel as Orfeo, a divinely gifted musician and poet, in Christoph Willibald Gluck’s retelling of the Greek myth. In it, Orfeo has to lead his love Euridice back to the world of the living. Leslie Dala will conduct the show that’s directed and choreographed by Vancouver-based contemporary-dance artist Idan Cohen, whose Ne.Sans Opera is making its first collaboration with the VO. Krisztina Szabó stars as Euridice and Mireille Asselin as Amore, with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and Chorus adding to the musical power.
February 12 and 13, VO music director emeritus Jonathan Darlington returns to conduct Pietro Mascagni’s lush Cavalleria Rusticana in Concert at the Q.E. Featured performers are Othalie Graham as Santuzza, David Pomeroy as Turridu, and Gregory Dahl as Alfio.
And opening April 30, director Brenna Corner and conductor Rosemary Thomson bring the operetta HMS Pinafore to life.
