VANCOUVER WRITERS FEST is wrapping up its 2024 Incite season by featuring finalists of this year’s BC and Yukon Book Prizes.
Henry Tsang, a visual and media artist who teaches at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, is nominated for the Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Choice Award for White Riot: The 1907 Anti-Asian Riots in Vancouver. His collection of essays and photographs explores the conditions leading up to a demonstration and parade organized by the Asiatic Exclusion League and the ensuing mob attack on the city’s Chinese-Canadian and Japanese-Canadian communities.
Cree-Métis writer Samantha Nock is nominated for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize for A Family of Dreamers. Her debut poetry collection explores the concept of “home”, and covers the complexities of growing up in rural northeast B.C.
Heiltsuk First Nation member Brandon Reid is nominated for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize for Beautiful Beautiful, a coming-of-age story that delves into Indigeneity, masculinity, and cultural tradition.
The authors will discuss their shortlisted titles as well as the importance of place in their works; there will be readings and an audience Q&A.
Presented in partnership with Vancouver Public Library and BC and Yukon Book Prizes, the free event is hosted by Megan Cole, the book prizes’ director of programming and communications.
