From the Beach Boys to Bach, Vetta Chamber Music thinks outside the box in Joan and Joe, March 3 to 6
The upcoming concert features Vetta’s artistic director Joan Blackman performing with the Joe Trio

Vetta Chamber Music presents Joan and Joe: Outside the Box on March 3 at 2 pm at West Point Grey United Church; March 4 at 7:30 pm at West Vancouver United Church; March 5 at 2 pm at Pyatt Hall; and March 6 at 7:30 pmn at ArtSpring on Salt Spring Island.
An arrangement of the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” and “Surf’s Up”; Astor Piazzolla’s “Summer”; and Bernie, Casey and Pinker’s “Sweet Georgia Brown” (which is perhaps best known as the Harlem Globetrotters’ theme song): these may not be the kind of numbers that first come to mind when thinking of a performance by a chamber-music ensemble. The title of Vetta Chamber Music’s upcoming concert, however, hints at the content, with Joan and Joe: Outside the Box hitting local stages this weekend.
Those first names refer to Vetta artistic director Joan Blackman, a violin virtuoso; and the members of the Vancouver-based Joe Trio: Cameron Wilson (violinist and arranger); cellist Charles Inkman; and pianist Allen Stiles.
Wilson arranged the aforementioned combo of Brian Wilson songs as well as other pieces on the program, including “Classic TV Themes meet the Great Composers”, “Duelling Trio”, and “The Sad Story of Little Joe”. Also on offer are Bach’s Trio in C major, Schubert’s Andante, and more.
Formed in 1989, the Joe Trio is known for having far-reaching musical interests, playing everything from works by the likes of Haydn and Shostakovich to their own arrangements of pop, jazz and rock tunes.
