FORMER CAPTURE PHOTOGRAPHY Festival executive director Kim Spencer-Nairn is set to step into the role of managing director at Ballet BC, effective October 24.

Spencer-Nairn is a chartered professional accountant with expertise in arts entrepreneurship and management. She was born in Montreal and raised in Vancouver, spending four years studying with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Professional Division before pursuing a career in finance. She worked for KPMG and Ernst & Young providing audit, accounting, and taxation services to music and film clients.

Spencer-Nairn left public practice in 2008, and founded the Capture Photography Festival in Vancouver in 2013. She has been a Board Trustee of the Audain Art Museum in Whistler and was appointed to the board of the Canada Council for the Arts in 2018. She has held volunteer-committee and fundraising roles with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Museum of Anthropology, and the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, and holds a master’s degree in Arts and Cultural Enterprise from Central Saint Martins in London, England.

“Her appointment aligns with a new era for the organization, and her financial background combined with her deep roots in the Vancouver arts scene and proven leadership capabilities will ensure the company continues towards a bright future,” Ballet BC board chair Laura Cundari said in the press announcement today.

“Her passion for the arts is inspiring, and her vast experience will undoubtedly allow us to reach new heights," added artistic director Medhi Walerski. "I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish as we work together to achieve our collective vision for Ballet BC.”

In June 2022 it was announced that former executive director John Clark was departing the company after five years.

Ballet BC is moving to its own building on Granville Island in the former Arts Umbrella digs. The renovated space offers a significant increase in both studio and administration space and will enable Ballet BC to continue to grow. In its strategic plan, the company has also aimed to establish a Choreographic Institute, with continued emphasis on international touring.
