Music on Main’s Fall 2021 Digital Releases keep the music going, virtually

Outstanding local musicians contribute their talents, thoughts to weekly videos

Ever since Music on Main launched in 2006, it has produced classical, new, and genre-bending music in all kinds of interesting environments—and with the onset of the pandemic, those venues include the virtual realm. With its Fall 2021 Digital Releases, Music on Main shares new new video performances and artistic insights with outstanding local musicians every Tuesday until November 2.

Tuning in is a terrific way to meet or rediscover excellent musicians, enjoy engaging music, escape your to-do list, and be inspired.

There are exciting upcoming Musical Moments to watch out for. On October 19, tune in for a Musical Moment with Mark Takeshi McGregor - Keiko Devaux’s Horai. Mark will be performing the world premiere of Keiko Devaux’s Horai live at the upcoming 10th Modulus Festival.

On October 26, Kessler Academy Orchestra performs violinist-composer Brooklyn Wood‘s Celadon Waves. This innovative, youth-focused training academy that features an entirely musician-led string orchestra mentorship program, driven by the Vancouver-based Microcosmos Quartet, in proud partnership with Music on Main.

This intergenerational collaboration, named for Vancouver’s beloved centenarian and philanthropist Susan Kessler, is dedicated to keeping classical music vibrant and vital in the 21st century. It also builds agency and confidence in its participants, and creates opportunities for audiences to listen powerfully, together.

On November 2, Saina Khaledi plays santour. Khaledi, who was the winner of the Iranian Santour Festival in 2003, and graduated in Music (Bachelors of Arts) from the Tehran Music University in 2007.

She has performed in Iran, Austria, Japan, Netherlands, USA, and Canada often as a composer, soloist, or with groups such as Vashaan Ensemble, Vancouver Intercultural Orchestra (VICO), BC Chinese Music Ensemble (BCCME), Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO), among others. She currently teaches santour at Capilano University and via private lessons.

Past recordings are available for viewing, with previous performances including Kaija Saariaho’s Laconisme de l’aile by Mark Takeshi McGregor, flute; Plakaly děvčata (The Girls Were Crying) by Julia Ulehla, vocals; and Tiny Death and Lennon/McCartney’s Michelle by Aram Bajakian, guitar; among many others.

The Fall 2021 Digital Releases are in keeping with Music on Main’s mission to create community through exciting new music.
