Two newly released rehearsal videos from the world-class contemporary dance company (see below) show Arts Umbrella and Ballet BC alumna Sophie Whittome taking on a starring role.

She features prominently in the teasers for both pieces in a double bill featuring two up-and-coming choreographers: Bulgarian Dimo Milev’s moody and languorous Fusions and some confusions, and Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman’s quirky Four Relations. The latter also features Arts Umbrella grad Nick Daniels.

Born in Edmonton, Whittome trained at Arts Umbrella from 2015 to 2018 and then danced with Ballet BC for the next two seasons. She joined NDT2, the Hague-based company’s younger, indie-feeling division, in August 2020.

So did Daniels, who hails from New Jersey and just graduated from the Granville Island-based Arts Umbrella this past summer.

NDT, of course, has other deep Vancouver connections; former Ballet BC artistic director Emily Molnar now helms the 61-year-old organization, and choreographic star Crystal Pite regularly creates for the cutting-edge company.

Dare to Say streams live from the Hague, meaning you can watch it with your morning coffee at 11 am PST each day. What makes the double bill interesting is that Ekman and Milev are forced to innovate within the restrictions of COVID, finding new ways for their performers to move within social distancing parameters.

The livestream presentation will include an introduction to the work followed by a fully staged performance.
