Jazz fans won’t want to miss a mini jazz festival coming to the North Shore from June 25 to July 3.
Presented by the BlueShore at CapU in partnership with TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, North Shore Jazz features Canadian and international stars from Norway, New York, and New Orleans performing free and ticketed shows at four venues.
First, the free shows. Montreal-based artist Joyce N’Sana (June 25, 1 pm, at Civic Plaza 14th & Lonsdale) delivers energetic hip-hop with satisfying sides of reggae, soul, and gospel with her five-piece band and three dancers
Toronto's Kobo Town (June 26, 2 pm, Lynn Valley Village) pushes boundaries to redefine calypso music. Expect upbeat Afro-Caribbean dance music performed by a six-piece band including two horn players.
New York twang-noir institution Big Lazy (July 1, 7:30 pm, West Vancouver Memorial Library) could easily make soundtracks to your favourite spaghetti western or classic crime films.
Jamie Lee Trio July 2, 1 pm, Civic Plaza 14th & Lonsdale), led by Vancouver drummer/composer Jamie Lee, is an adventurous piano trio inspired by soundscape exploration and melodic storytelling.
And now, on to the ticketed shows. Seattle’s Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio (June 27) peddles in groove-laden soul music laced with extended, super-intuitive jam sessions. Earlier this month, the band opened for Jack White.
Paul Pigat of Cousin Harley joins Stephen Ulrich of Big Lazy (June 30) for a duo set of masterful guitar music. Expect to be wowed by a fabulous array of vintage pop, swing, surf, jazz, and more. The rhythm section of Ulrich’s NYC band Big Lazy joins the duo for the second set.
John Boutté (July 3) is a fantastic singe who evokes Sam Cooke, but his spirit is all New Orleans. A BlueShore at CapU favourite, the dynamo singer is perhaps best known for writing the theme song to the hit TV show Treme.
All four of these concerts take place 8 pm at BlueShore at CapU (2055 Purcell Way). Tickets range from $30 to $35 and are available at capilanou.ca/centre.
