Universal Gospel Choir presents Everybody Dancin’ with special guest Khari Wendell McClelland on June 18 at 3 pm and 6:30 pm at Christ Church Cathedral
IF JUNE-UARY HAS you down, Universal Gospel Choir’s annual “soulstice” celebration may be just the thing to lift your spirits. UGC’s upcoming concert, Everybody Dancin’, features Vancouver’s own Khari Wendell McClelland as special guest.
UGC will perform some of McClelland’s originals as well as gospel songs, African American spirituals, pop tunes, world music, and more.
The city’s oldest gospel choir (in terms of years in existence, not energy levels; it started in 1985), UGC is a multi-faith ensemble with more than 70 members that’s known for its big sound.
McClelland, who’s recognized for his work on the critically acclaimed Freedom Singer project, which re-created music that fugitive slaves carried with them during their journey northward into Canada, also performs with the Roots Gospel group The Sojourners.
Led by UGC artistic director Lonnie Delisle, Everybody Dancin' will also feature the UGC five-piece band, which includes Grammy-nominated Jonny Tobin on keys, Jay Leonard Juatco on guitar, Jason Nickel on bass, and Johnny Andrews on drums.
