Parallel 04: UNION Immersed unfurls an adventure in new XR performance and installation, November 28
Showcase at the Roundhouse displays cutting-edge worlds from mentorship project by Vancouver New Music, INTER/MEDIATE, and CURRENT
Vancouver New Music presents Parallel 04: UNION Immersed on November 28 from 11 am to 6 pm at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre; pregistration required.
TEN ARTISTS from a range of backgrounds, including visual and sound design, creative writing, dance, and media arts are ready to show the collaborative results of a new WebXR mentorship project.
Guided by Kiran Bhumber ਕਿਰਨਦੀਪ ਕੌਰ ਭੰਬਰ and Nancy Lee 李南屏 and organized by Vancouver New Music, the CURRENT symposium, and the INTER/MEDIATE fest, Parallel 04: UNION Immersed brings performances and installations to the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre over the late morning, afternoon, and early evening on Sunday.
Featured artists promise to meld visual innovation with sonic creativity: think Adewolf, Max Ammo, Colt Desjarlais-Tataquasan, Alanna Ho, Hadis Kakanejadi, Scope, Kimit Sekhon, Ruby Singh, Tamar Tabori, and Andrea Wong.
The work is a mindblowing mix that sits on the cusp of WebXR design and IRL performance. Think virtual labyrinth tours of 1990s Lagos, Nigeria (Adewolf's Lostalgia); a digitally conjured riff on the structural puzzles of Escher as a way to explore mental health and displacement (Desjarlais-Tataquasan's What's Underneath the Cynic?); and, our personal favourite, "a meditative polyphonic garden of 360° video domes, wisps of folk instrumentals, poetry and spacious vocals sown throughout a floating galactic island", care of Singh and Wong's Space Garden.
