PRISMA stands for Pacific Region International Summer Music Association. The PRISMA Festival & Academy celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2022, with a return to in-person concerts at the PRISMA Festival. Organizers are thrilled to be back in-person once again, with an 80-piece orchestra and 23 guest artists joining the festivities in Powell River from June 13 to 25.

Powell River’s scenic location, combined with strong local support, is what makes the PRISMA Festival truly one-of-a-kind. There are daily musical events, including orchestra and chamber music performances, masterclasses, and limelight concerts, all open to the public.

The PRISMA Festival Orchestra, the highlight of the festival, performs four full symphony concerts. Once again led by maestro Arthur Arnold (former music director of the Moscow Symphony), this ensemble will comprise high-level music students from 18 different countries.

PRISMA’s 2022 orchestra program will feature Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, and great masterworks by Boulanger, Mozart, Smetana and more. Esteemed guest artists are members of some of the world’s leading orchestras, such as Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, LA Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, and more.

Other wonderful performances for 2022 include Lafayette String Quartet, the only all-female string quartet in the world with all four of its original members, on June 14; and the semi-finals of the Concerto Competition (June 15), a thrilling display of talent as select students compete for the chance to advance to the final round and play a solo with the PRISMA Festival Orchestra.

Beethoven’s Belated Birthday (June 16), is an introduction of 2022 students and world-class guest artists in a musical extravaganza unveiling the 2022 PRISMA Festival Orchestra. On the program are Beethoven’s String Quintet in C Major and Octet, Op. 103, as well as Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante K. 364.

Sounds of Day & Night is a Symphony Concert on June 17 where the PRISMA Festival Orchestra plays masterworks by Boulanger (D’un matin de printemps), Mozart (Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor), and Rimsky-Korsakov (Scheherazade).

PRISMA on the Beach at Willingdon Beach is on June 18. Located in the heart of the city, the park offers a campsite, wharf, fishing pier, playground, museum and other amenities overlooking gorgeous ocean views of the Strait of Georgia. Guest artists and First Nations singers, drummers, and composers from the Tla’amin Nation will perform.

Among the other festival highlights are the Kids’ Concert & Fun Fair (June 21); Forbidden Music Regained: Chamber Music Concert (June 23); and Bohemian Reflections: Symphony Concerts (June 24 and 25). Then there’s the popular Sail to the Symphony tour package for Vancouver Island visitors.

There’s much more. Tickets ($30) and passes ($125) are now on sale at 1-855-5PRISMA or prismafestival.com.
