Kasandra Flamenco’s ROJO Y SOMBRA.

Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is hosting Kasandra Flamenco’s ROJO Y SOMBRA, a contemporary-flamenco exploration into the energies of the root chakra, on May 26 and 27 in the Studio Theatre at 8 pm.

ROJO Y SOMBRA—which translates to “red and shadows”—depicts the passion, blood, and primal instincts that emerge when confronted by the darkness of fear. A visceral expression of emotions, the dance weaves traditional, fiery flamenco and avant-garde contemporary using the textures of exquisite red silk fabric that spans the stage.

The Kasandra Flamenco Ensemble features artistic director and flamenco dancer Kasandra “La China”, contemporary dancer Alvin Tolentino, contemporary-flamenco dancer Andreana Karogiannis, and composer-guitarist Josue Otero Tacoronte.

The trio of dancers explore the dynamic tension of the fabric—sometimes soft and flowing, other times elastic and violent—while Tacoronte brings the show to life with virtuosic classical, flamenco, and contemporary guitar juxtaposed by electronic soundscape and percussion.

Tickets and more information can be found at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.
