Turning Point Ensemble is pleased to present Solo Flare, a concert showcasing the members of the ensemble, at the Orpheum Annex January 28 and 29 at 7:30 pm.
A cross-disciplinary collaboration between individual composers, filmmakers, dancers, visual artists and more, Solo Flare will mark the live premieres of 11 new works written for a member of the Turning Point Ensemble by a composer of their choice, with additional artistic contributions from a variety of performers.
The works presented as part of Solo Flare began life during the pandemic, conceived to give individual ensemble members the opportunity for creativity and musical fulfilment, despite the external limitations and restrictions imposed on live performance.
Each work (plus five additional compositions not featured as part of Solo Flare) was also filmed. Each soloist chose the composer that they would like to work with, and also collaborated with filmmakers, visual effects designers, and other performing artists. The resulting pieces are not only satisfying musically, but also provide a fascinating window into the musical strengths and creative proclivities of the many talented players who comprise the ensemble.
The featured groupings include oboist David Owen, composer Bob Pritchard, and dancer/choreographer Emmalena Frederickson; harpist Janelle Nadeau and composer Dorothy Chang; flutist Brenda Fedoruk, singer Robyn Driedger-Klassen, and composer Jeffrey Ryan; double bassist David Brown and composer/fire dancer Meriah Mennie; violinist Mary Sokol Brown and composer Owen Underhill; bassoonist/pianist Ingrid Chiang and composer Réjean Marois; violinist Marc Destrubé and composer Peggy Lee; trumpeter Marcus Goddard and composer John Oliver; pianist Jane Hayes and composer Farangis Nurulla-Khoja; trombonist Jeremy Berkman, flamenco dancer Sydney Cochrane, and composer Josué Tacoronte; and percussionist Jonathan Bernard and composer Curtis Andrews.
Turning Point presents extraordinary music for large chamber ensemble written from the early-20th century through the present. The artists of Solo Flare, as well as additional artists, filmmakers, and collaborators, will be featured as part of the 1+1+1… series of filmed works. These 16 short films are available as part of a subscription series via Turning Point Ensemble’s web site, and will become available beginning January 31.
