The Cultch launches new RE/PLAY digital-theatre platform to complement live programming
Offerings starting next month include a one-one-one interactive show from Belgium’s Ontroerend Goed and a premiere by Vancouver’s Neworld Theatre
THE CULTCH is launching RE/PLAY, a new platform for digital theatre programming.
In kicks off with four form-pushing shows that will run between February and May 2022, including a one-on-one interactive work from Belgium and an interdisciplinary look at the climate catastrophe.
The Cultch has committed to online programming to continue alongside their in-person offerings—not just as a way to reach audiences social distancing due to the pandemic, but to include more accessible options for audiences, minimize environmental impact, and allow for new forms of performance.
The series kicks off February 2 to 13 with celebrated Belgian theatre company Ontroerend Goed and its TM—a live, interactive livestream of a one-to-one experience about conspiracy theories and populist ideology. It’s produced in partnership with Richard Jordan Productions and Chicago Shakespeare Theater.
Next up, February 17 to 20, the frank theatre’s Be-Longing will be offered on-demand. The prefilmed production was created in 2020, exploring feelings of exile, queerness, mourning and migration.
And then, in April, RE/PLAY will feature the digital presentation of Neworld Theatre’s bilingual Clean/Espejos, by Governor General Award-winning playwright Christine Quintana with translation and adaptation by Paula Zelaya Cervantes. The presentation, in Spanish and English and available by demand, will be created specifically for RE/PLAY by The Cultch video director Cameron Anderson, during the live run of the March 2022 show at the Historic Theatre. Streaming April 5 to 10, it tells the story of two women at a Mexican resort: a hotel floor manager reeling from a family loss, and Sarah, a Canadian wedding guest with a long-held traumatic secret.
Wrapping up the RE/PLAY season from May 10 to 15, The Cultch streams UK theatre company Complicité, an interdisciplinary ode to the climate disaster, Can I Live?. It interweaves spoken word, rap, theatre, animation and scientific facts.
RE/PLAY single tickets and the Digital Series Package are on sale now via The Cultch at 604-251-1363, or online at thecultch.com.
