Sound of the City: Prado
The singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist sounds off on Lil Uzi Vert, Gucci Mane, and Granville Island
SOUND OF THE CITY is a chance to discover and explore Vancouver’s incredible and diverse music scene created in partnership by the City of Vancouver and Stir.
We hear from different local artists or acts, what’s in heavy rotation on their playlist as well as what’s happening in their world amid COVID-19—in their own words.
We ask each artist or act to curate and share a Sound of the City playlist that features some of their favourite Vancouver musicians.
Sound of the City is a way to celebrate local talent, highlight BIPOC and underrepresented artists, and connect with creatives and each other. It’s time to crank the volume on the music that’s all around us, right in our own backyard.
Prado
VANCOUVER-BORN, LOS Angeles-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, director, and producer Prado will turn on a dime from sweet to sadistic before doubling back all over again. (If Lana Del Rey, Gwen Stefani, and Lil Uzi Vert got high together, it might sound something like her.)
Inspired by everyone from Bjork and Lady Gaga to Gucci Mane, she bought a guitar in high school, learned how to produce and posted her earliest recordings of “hella bad love songs” to Twitter and SoundCloud. Releasing music at a prolific pace, she dropped a trio of EPs: Friction (2014), Dark One (2015), and Tru Love (2015). Throughout high school, she loaned her pen to various artists under the moniker of Alienkanye. Introducing herself properly on her 2021 debut EP for tmwrk records, she has come to flip genres upside down once and for all.

Prado’s Playlist
How are you feeling about life right now?
I feel good about life, I’m taking the world day by day.
What did you have planned for 2020 and for this year, and how has the pandemic changed those plans?
Feels like everyone had huuuge plans this past year. I had releases planned... And I woulda been touring I’d like to hope…
What, or who, do you miss most about pre-pandemic life?
The clubs and being able to share drinks... It was a simpler time!
What gives you solace?
God, I don’t know... I’m still chasing that, actually. Music is the closest thing.
What song or album has been in your heavy rotation and why?
Gucci Mane featuring Verse Simmonds, “You Gona Love Me” . I don’t know, when I’m in the beamer, this sh*t just be hitting different. And it’s a love song... It’s literally a Gucci Mane love song.
Who is your favourite Vancouver musician or artist? What about them inspires you?
I don’t have a favourite... Gold star to everyone, tho, for trying.
If you could change one thing about Vancouver, what would it be?
I’d cut off Granville Island with a huge chainsaw and let it drift into the ocean never to be seen again. Whoever wants to go with the island can go. All the Indigenous art made by white women will float into the sea where it belongs.
Who is your dream collaborator?
Dream collaborator is Lil Uzi Vert, I love him so much till I die. I know all the words to his songs.
