PULL OUT your headphones: the Vancouver Podcast Festival runs virtually from November 18 to 22, with a mix of the educational, the irreverent, and the hard-hitting journalistic.

Last week, we spoke to reporter Michelle Shephard about her Brainwashed podcast, one of the central features at the fest. Here are three more events worth tuning into.

Pop Chat, November 18 at 6 pm

Host Elamin Abdelmahmoud and the Pop Chat panel tape a live show during the fest, tackling everything from celebrity gossip to guilty TV pleasures to cancel culture. The new show, launched in September by CBC Podcasting, brings in a rotating cast of lively pop-culture addicts from the Twitterverse to riff on everything from anime to Britney Spears. Think smart talk punctuated by a lot of laughter. Abdelmahmoud’s guests for this show are The Daily Beast reporter Kevin Fallon and culture commentator, producer, and Refinery29 writer Kathleen Newman-Bremang.

Sandy & Nora Talk Politics, November 20 at 6 pm

Sandy Hudson is a political strategist and communications expert and Nora Loreto is a writer, musician and activist based in Quebec City. Together, they get rowdy and unfiltered, taking on big and often radical political current events and ideas. Fiery past topics have ranged from the unequal impact of the pandemic on racialized populations to the implications of the white settler fishers in Nova Scotia threatening Mi’kmaq fishers. In the live event here, they’ll talk about In this event, the co-hosts will discuss the outcome of the American presidential election, its impact on Canada, and where we all go next.

We Become the Stories We Tell Ourselves: Podcast Workshop with Ryan McMahon, November 22 at 10 am

Anishinaabe/Metis comedian Ryan McMahon’s Red Man Laughing podcast has drawn a devoted following for its lively and irreverent Indigenous spin on arts and culture, from the glory of movie star Taika Watiti to Christmas and capitalism. In his appearance here, the long-time podcaster and founder of the multimedia Indian & Cowboy network gives a workshop on podcasting, diving into the industry and the listener and publishing aspects of it.
