THE VANCOUVER Symphony Orchestra has just launched a new platform to boost its pandemic-era virtual-education programming.

The Music Room, a new online space within TheConcertHall.ca, will feature everything from concerts by students to interactive music lessons, bringing symphonic music to classrooms and living rooms. Programming will include concerts designed for young audiences as well as educational content and activities.

The platform also promises backstage access for students to learn directly from the VSO’s musicians and maestros; Canada Life Little Kids Concerts for young children aged 0-4, featuring singing, clapping, and movement; and masterclasses with musical artists and students from the VSO School of Music and Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute.

Families can subscribe for $59.99 for the full season, while educators will soon be able to subscribe at the classroom, school, or district level.

“Education is central to our mission to connect communities through exceptional musical experiences,” Angela Elster, president and CEO of the VSO and VSO School of Music, said in the press announcement today. “In response to the COVID crisis, we are taking our work online to ensure that students, teachers and families, throughout the province of BC have access to high-quality music education content from a symphonic perspective, and beyond. Music education has never before been more critical to the wellbeing of society.”

The new initiative aims to keep the VSO’s Education & Community Programs going. In a nonpandemic year, they reach over 50,000 people, and include over 90 visits to schools.
