Four mainstage shows and one indie production featuring Vancouver’s up-and-coming talent fill the calendar
STUDIO 58, THE PROFESSIONAL theatre training program at snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ Langara College, has just announced the lineup for its 59th season. The 2024-25 season offers four mainstage productions and one indie show, all featuring Vancouver’s latest up-and-coming talent.
Baggage by Sarah Segal-Lazar takes place October 3 to 13. Directed by Jessie Liang, the work centres on Jill, who’s navigating a new relationship with Ben in her late 20s. The emotional baggage of her exes literally surrounds her, as personified bags weigh in on her every move. Baggage was created with support from Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal and was translated into French with support from Théâtre Aux Écuries and Festival du Jamais Lu.
Risky Nights (Fall Edition) In the Flesh runs October 8 to 13. With direction by Katie Voravong, this original production was created with and is performed by fourth-term students.
Linck & Mülhahn by Ruby Thomas takes place November 21 to December 1. Angelica Schwartz directs the show, which was first performed in January 2023 at the Hampstead Theatre in London. When charismatic Anastasius Linck meets Catharina Mülhahn, it’s love—and lust—at first sight. As Catharina fights against her mother’s desire for a traditional marriage in favour of her independence, Anastasius works to conceal their identity to stay alive. While the couple explore gender and sexual identities, rigid 18th-century society aims to tear them apart.
Heathers: The Musical features the book, music, and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy and is based on the film written by Daniel Waters. Taking place January 30 to February 16, 2025, the dark comedy is directed and choreographed by Julie Tomaino. A trio of popular girls named Heather mercilessly rule Westerburg High School. Everything changes when underdog Veronica meets bad boy J.D., a new student with a violent streak. As the Heathers take Veronica under their wing, J.D. encourages her to smash the social hierarchy.
Slasher runs from March 27 to April 6, 2025. Conceived by Craig Hall and created by Hall, Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg, Torquil Campbell, and Jamie Nesbitt with the worksop participation of Studio 58 students, the production is choreographed by Friedenberg. It takes place on a 1980s low-budget slasher film set and sees the lines blurring between cast and crew’s on- and off-camera lives.
