Carousel Theatre for Young People presents Green Thumb Theatre’s The Code by Rachel Aberle at the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island from May 10 to 14

AFTER TOURING ACROSS North America, Green Thumb Theatre’s The Code is coming to its hometown.

Written and directed by Green Thumb artistic director Rachel Aberle, the play is about the complexities of high-school relationships, how they’re influenced by social media, and the murky line between friendship and romance. Moira spearheads a protest at school that gets the spring dance cancelled. In return, she gets cruel messages online and at school. Her best friends Simon and Connor have her back, until one of them reveals romantic feelings toward her that she doesn’t return. Feeling “friend-zoned”, they exchange hurtful comments, and everyone is forced to revisit their interactions and associations. The Code challenges teens to hold themselves accountable for their words and actions and consider what’s at stake when certain lines are crossed.

Aberle received the 2018 Sydney J. Risk Prize for Outstanding Original Script by an Emerging Writer for the work, her second play. The Code is the final show of CTYP’s 2021-22 season.
