Two of Vancouver’s most exciting young choreographers premiere a pair of expressive new contemporary dance works exploring relationships and emotions in Departure.

Marissa Wong and Katie Cassady co-founded TWObigsteps Collective in 2015, and, along with other members, went on to create eight new works. Departure marks the collective’s final creation.

Presented in partnership with The Dance Centre as part of explorASIAN – Asian Heritage Month, the program features Wong’s solo, Departure. The work considers the impact experiences have on our behaviour patterns.

Cassady’s duet, II, focuses on the relationship between two women, examining power dynamics, intimacy, and the ways we connect with each other.

“TWObigsteps Collective provided a safe space to explore new skills to diversify our practice, not only as performers, but to meet the versatility this career demands,” says Wong. “Our shared practices have advanced our capabilities as dancers and we will now apply these learnings to the next stages of our careers.”

Following Departure, Wong will take over from Amber Funk Barton as artistic director for the response., which will continue under a new name, the Falling Company. Cassady will continue as a freelance dancer and choreographer, with a new work premiering at Vines Festival.

Departure streams live on May 28 at 8pm PST and May 29 at 3 pm and 8 pm PST. More information and tickets, $15 to $40, are at The Dance Centre.
