Théâtre la Seizième and Carousel Theatre for Young People present Je suis William, a French-language production, at the Waterfront Theatre on February 16 at 7 pm.

At night, Margaret Shakespeare—William’s 13-year-old sister—writes in secret, creating stories of remarkable power. But in her small English village in 1577, a girl’s place is in the home. Women who can read and write are accused of witchcraft and doomed to a tragic fate.

When William discovers the extent of his sister’s talent, he is torn between protecting Margaret and sharing her talent with the world. With music and humour aplenty, author Rébecca Déraspe revisits this illustrious playwright’s myth from a feminist lens. Je suis William questions whether we are really so far removed from a past society of imposed gender roles.

A creative writing workshop and post-show talkback with Déraspe take place on February 16; plus, artist-psychologist Helene Morizur hosts a self-expression workshop on February 15.

Tickets and details are at Théâtre la Seizième.
