VR headsets give viewers a salmon's underwater eye view as UNINTERRUPTED moves to Lonsdale Quay, July 14 to 24
The cinematic creation by Nettie Wild, Betsy Carson, and Rae Hull takes new form, after its projection under the Cambie Bridge four years ago
UNINTERRUPTED screens via VR outdoors at North Vancouver’s Shipyard Commons at Lonsdale Quay from July 14 to 24, and then at the Burnaby Art Gallery from August 3 to 13. Book free viewings ahead here.
UNINTERRUPTED, THE OUTDOOR public-art spectacle that brought the life cycle of the salmon to cinematic life under the Cambie Bridge in 2017 is available for a new kind of screening at Lonsdale Quay this week.
This time, its awe-inspiring underwater footage won’t be projected on a massive scale under a bridge. Instead, visitors can experience the 30-minute visual and sound experience on immersive, 360-degree virtual reality headsets, while seated outdoors. The film plunges viewers into a river teeming with life, giving them a salmon’s eye view of the world—and driving home the need to protect the incredible, and essential, journey they take.
This summer’s VR presentations around the region are just the latest incarnation of an intensive, five-year collaboration between director Nettie Wild, producers Betsy Carson and Rae Hull, editor Michael Brockington, and a diverse team of artists and media specialists.
As part of a larger Metro Vancouver tour of different sites, UNINTERRUPTED debuted last week outside the Museum of Vancouver, and now moves starting July 14 to the Lonsdale waterfront at the Shipyards Commons.
Headsets will be provided to audiences of 20 to experience together.
Seating is distanced and outdoors, and all equipment is sanitized between showings with ultraviolet light.
Viewings are free but seats must be booked in advance; online booking is now open at uninterrupted.ca.
“And if you miss the North Van viewing, just head to the Burnaby Art Gallery, in its picturesque park setting, in early August, with more Vancouver installations to be announced after that. Bring the whole family.
