OLD-GROWTH CEDAR. Earl Grey. Asian Parsnip. If those aren’t flavours you associate with gin, you need to get down to the BC Gin Festival next weekend, where a wildly evolving new world awaits.
Craft-spirit fans can work their way through small-batch tastings and intermingle with distillers and mixologists at the annual fundraiser for Indian Summer Festival.

Tofino Distillery’s Old Growth Cedar Gin.

Resurrection’s Lavender Gin.
Amid the international contenders, Dublin City Spirits will be pouring its signature drink; East London’s 58 and Co. features a divine-sounding Apple & Hibiscus Pink Gin; and all the way from Finland, Kyrö Distillery Company will introduce guests to both its pink and a dark gin. And what would an Indian Summer-backed gin-tasting festival be without Kambipura, India’s Amrut Distilleries on hand?
The event is also an education in how vibrant the gin-crafting scene is here in B.C. Make sure to try North Van-based Copperpenny Distilling Co.’s Lost Horizons Rare Tea Gin; Powell River-based Salish Sea Spirits’s Blackberry Gin; and the aforementioned Tofino Distillery’s ultra-West Coast Old Growth Cedar Gin.
Don’t miss the standout gin-makers in our own back yard: Resurrection Spirits, with its beloved Lavender Gin on offer, Please! Beverage Co. with a Raspberry Gin mix, and Plenty Real Brews with a Mango Pineapple Coconut Gin cocktail.
The tasting-event entry includes a personal gin-mixing glass for your cocktail creations—because we’ve come a long way since the simple gin and tonic (though you can never go wrong with a classic). And you’ll definitely want to maximize your sipping by hitting some of the gourmet food on offer.
