Whisky & Words offers a chance to celebrate local standouts, April 25 at Performance Works
Vancouver Writers Fest fundraiser features tastings from strong B.C. contingent, as well as Scottish distillers

WHISKY HAS GONE together with good literature for centuries—from Mark Twain reportedly remarking that “Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough” to Raymond Chandler asserting that “There is no bad whiskey. There are only some whiskeys that aren’t as good as others.”
And so it’s a perfect fit for Vancouver Writers Fest to be toasting the legendary drink for its April fundraiser on April 25 at Performance Works on Granville Island.
This year, the event is a chance to explore whiskies beyond the American standbys that have disappeared from store shelves. B.C. distillers are taking front and centre at Whisky & Words. Think Liberty Distillery, whose TRUST Southern Cask Strength Whiskey offers a northern twist on classic full-strength American bourbon, starting with a mash bill of organic British Columbian corn and then aging in special charred oak casks.

Things don’t get more local than Odd Society Spirits’ Burns Bog Smoked Malt Whisky, made with local peat; the East Van brand has also won awards for its Commodore Single Malt Whisky, crafted from B.C.–grown, malted barley. Elsewhere, search out local bright lights like Roots & Wings Distillery, Central City Brewers & Distillers, and Shelter Point.
Looking for more Canadian brands? You can also sample the best from Craftwork Spirits, TS Global, and Canada-Scotland operation Charton Hobbs.
And of course, Scottish makers take a proud place at the event, including Tomintoul, located in the highest village of the Scottish Highlands and celebrated for its handcrafted single malt. Magnum Scotch Malt Whisky Cream Liqueur and Whyte & MacKay will also be serving up wee drams of uisge beatha.
The event is a chance to explore untried brands alongside delectable bites, all while supporting a festival that brings authors from here and around the world to Granville Island each October.
