ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE VANCOUVER is giving Vancouverites a taste of France at a special event called La Galette des Rois on January 11 from 4 pm to 7 pm.

There are different styles of the traditional dessert, depending on the region it comes from: the sweet treat is either made with puff pastry and frangipane, or it’s a brioche that is filled or covered with candied fruit. A bean is hidden inside, and whoever finds it becomes the king or queen of the night. It’s traditionally served during Epiphany celebrations and marks the start of a new year.

There will be three types of galette on offer. The brioche galette, or king’s cake, which originates mainly from the south of France, is made of soft brioche in the shape of a crown and is decorated with candied fruits. The frangipane galette represents the Parisian tradition. One of the most popular choices during the Epiphany period, it consists of puff pastry filled with frangipane (a mixture of pastry cream and almond cream) or simply almond cream. The orange-chocolate galette is a more original version, beloved for its smoothness and flavour contrast.

Organized in partnership with Vancouver en Français, the event is taking place in Alliance Française Vancouver’s new building, a $24-million, 30,000-square-foot cultural facility that’s the largest of its kind in B.C. Located at 6161 Cambie Street near the new Oakridge Park shopping centre redevelopment, the venue features a 165-seat professional theatre, a 1,120-square-foot boutique art gallery, and 2,700 square feet of flexible artist spaces.

Tickets, $15 or $12 for members of Vancouver en Français, include a slice of galette and an alcoholic or nonalcoholic beverage.
