Vancouver Art Gallery presents Indigenous Beauty: Celebrating Winter Solstice Through Song on December 20 at 4 pm, presented on Zoom on streamed live to VAG’s Facebook page.
INDIGENOUS BEAUTY, A new program series presented by the Vancouver Art Gallery, is marking the shortest day of the year with Celebrating Winter Solstice Through Song.
Joining Shadae Rose Johnson, community relations coordinator of Indigenous programs, are Cynthia Jim (Coast Salish) and Tia Wood (Cree/Coast Salish), a mother-daughter duo who are internationally renowned singers, artists, and powwow dancers. Also appearing are CJ Thunder Spirit (Big Stone Cree Nation) and Demetrius Kenoras-Paul (Musqueam, Syilx and Secwepemc), who will perform a few songs.
“This session with Jim, Wood and guests will offer a communal opportunity to decolonize winter holiday celebrations, living in the moment of togetherness and sacredness of the home fire,” according go VAG. Celebrations also allow for people to practise Indigenous food and plant medicine sovereignty.
Viewers will be able to ask questions via Zoom’s Q&A function and engage with panellists and other attendees during the event through the Chat button.
Winter solstice 2021 in Northern Hemisphere will be at 7:58 am on December 21.
