The 2022-23 season is a momentous one for Vancouver Cantata Singers: the beloved ensemble is marking its 65th season while celebrating Paula Kremer’s milestone 10th year as artistic director.

Light of Humanity, on October 22, is the first of four concerts the choir will present this season, which follows the theme of FORTITUDE: Strength in Song. The choir will share an evening of music by Pärt, Britten, and Canadian composers Hussein Janmohamed, Larry Nickel, Shireen Abu Khader, Russell Wallace, and Tracy Wong, along with the premiere of composer-in-residence Craig Galbraith’s Lux Humanitas (Light of Humanity).

FORTITUDE: Strength in Song continues in December with VCS’s 19th Christmas Reprise, a perennial sold-out concert.

VCS returns to the stage in February with Songbird. An evening of music inspired by the imagery of birds and their songs, the performance features Brahms' Fünf Gesänge Op. 104 and a new commissioned arrangement of Fleetwood Mac's Songbird by Sam Dabrusin.

The season concludes in April with Randall Thompson's extended composition The Peaceable Kingdom. Inspired by the Edward Hicks' painting of the same name, the piece explores themes of good, evil, and peace. Canadian composer Iman Habibi's Colour of Freedom, reacting to the 2009 "Green Movement" in Iran which saw the death and imprisonment of dozens of Iranian protestors, is a stirring work culminating in a “magnificent light” featuring guest soloist Amir Haghighi. Paired with Mendelssohn's Verleih uns Frieden and Roxanna Panufnik's St Aidan's Prayer, VCS ends their season with a thought-provoking concert advocating for peace through spirituality, humanity, and song.

Subscriptions and single tickets are on sale now at the choir’s website, www.vancouvercantatasingers.com. Subscribers can save 20 percent by ordering all four concerts.
