Vancouver Chamber Choir presents Sounds of Finland, a love letter to Artistic Director Kari Turunen’s native country, at Christ Church Cathedral on November 29 at 7:30 pm.
When Turunen first assumed the role of the Vancouver Chamber Choir’s Artistic Director in 2019, he launched himself into an exploration of Canadian musical tastes and traditions, rather than only programming the pieces from Nordic and Baltic countries that were familiar to him. Now, in his sixth season with the organization, Turunen is embracing his roots once more as he shares songs from Finland with Vancouver audiences.
The program for this concert consists entirely of Finnish music, ranging from simple folk-song arrangements to edgy modernist pieces. Highlights include Jean Sibelius’s ethereal choral classic Rakastava (The Lover) along with the world premiere of Der Panther by contemporary composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi.
