Nancy Lee's interdisciplinary piece OSMOSi: 422 Unprocessable Entity marks world premiere, April 4 and 5

New Works and Vancouver New Music are partnering to present Nancy Lee 李南屏 with the world premiere of OSMOSi: 422 Unprocessable Entity, a work that weaves together movement, projection, spatial sound composition, and interactive costuming to build an immersive world where the ground is constantly shifting beneath one’s feet.
Performances are held at the Annex on April 4 and 5 at 8 pm, and are followed by a post-show talkback with the artists.
Step into the world of OSMOSi: 422 Unprocessable Entity, where a delivery app subroutine slowly develops consciousness after a corrupted update. Newly sentient, the performer discovers that the app is shutting down, and must mount a desperate bid for escape. Reflecting on the religion of workism and precarity of gig economy labour, audiences are confronted by the everyday within the unexpected, swirling landscape of OSMOSi.
Lee is a Taiwanese-Canadian interdisciplinary media artist and cultural producer. In 2017, they directed the VR dance film Tidal Traces in collaboration with Emmalena Fredriksson under the auspices of the National Film Board of Canada, marking the inception of their foray into XR. The following year, during their artist residency at Western Front with Kiran Bhumber, Lee co-created Telepresence, an 8.2-channel live-VR performance.

Lee’s interdisciplinary works have resonated on the global stage, with presentations at Cannes Film Festival, SXSW, MUTEK, Berlin International Film Festival, Vancouver International Film Festival, and Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
Beyond their artistic endeavours, they are a catalyst for change in the industry as an XR instructor at IM4 Media Lab, artistic mentor at Festival of Recorded Movement, and co-founder of Chapel Sound Art Foundation and CURRENT. In their latest projects, Lee has shifted their focus towards dance performance, writing, and a documentary project titled Woven Memory alongside Soledad Munoz.
OSMOSi: 422 Unprocessable Entity is directed and written by Lee, who also performs in the piece alongside Simran Sachar and Sophia Mai Wolfe. The work features electroacoustic composition by Lee and Aleksandar Zecevic, who also creates the sound design and interactive system. Choreography is by Nancy Lee 李南屏 and Emmalena Fredriksson, design is by Adam-Lin Bungag, and jewelry design is by Ian Nakamoto.
