Vancouver New Music has partnered with the Vancouver Improvised Arts Society and the NOW Society to present the first annual West Coast String Summit from March 9 to 12, with concerts at 8 pm each night.

Pre-show artist chats will take place at 7:15 pm nightly from March 9 to 11.

The series of concerts will be held across three different venues: Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre, the Annex, and 8EAST.

Bringing together quartets, ensembles, duos, and soloists, the summit will allow for eclectic explorations of string music, from improvisation to electronic elements. Performers will include Vancouver’s Meredith Bates and Alex Abahmed; Montreal’s Nicolas Caloia and Malcolm Goldstein; the U.S.’s Eyvind Kang; Montreal’s Quatuor Bozzini and Quatuor d’occasion; Vancouver’s Sapphire Haze, and Vancouver’s Josh Zubot Strings.

Renowned Montreal-based composers Goldstein and Caloia will also be hosting a free improvisation workshop for string players of varying skill levels, from 1 to 3 pm on March 10 at the Roundhouse (registration required).

Tickets for each show can be purchased through Eventbrite.
