Vancouver Recital Society welcomes guests to the Orpheum Theatre to see the Kanneh-Mason Family Celebration concert on May 5 at 8 pm.

The Kanneh-Mason family is made up of seven incredibly talented siblings, ranging in age from 13 to 26 years old: cellist Sheku, violinist Braimah, pianist Isata, pianist-cellists Jeneba and Mariatu, and pianist-violinists Konya and Aminata.

Sheku and Isata made their Canadian debuts in a sold-out concert with the Vancouver Recital Society in 2017. The duo has since returned in 2019, and Isata performed a solo recital in 2022.

The siblings’ upcoming concert at the Orpheum will include works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich, Brahms, and more.

The Kanneh-Masons have won many prizes and awards, and have appeared in numerous television shows. They made it to the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2015, where after their medley of Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Clean Bandit, world renowned judge Simon Cowell commented that they were “probably the most talented family in the world”.

In 2016, Sheku was the first Black musician to win the coveted BBC Young Musician competition, which has been running since 1978; and in 2018 he reached an audience of two billion worldwide when he played at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The siblings released their first album Carnival under the Decca Classics music label in October 2020 to great critical acclaim, and in May 2021 received the Global Award for Best Classical Artist.

All the Kanneh-Mason siblings attend or have attended London’s Royal Academy of Music and its primary and junior academies, except pianist Jeneba, who has progressed to London’s Royal College of Music for her undergraduate studies.

Started in 1980 by founder and artistic director Leila Getz, the Vancouver Recital Society presents 20 concerts a year at venues across the city such as the Vancouver Playhouse, UBC’s Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, and more.

It is one of the premier concert presenters in North America, offering a milestone debut series for rising stars and an internationally renowned concert series for the world’s most celebrated performing artists.

Tickets for Kanneh-Masons in concert can be found at the Vancouver Recital Society.
