Vancouver Chamber Choir conductor Kari Turunen will share the podium with five aspiring conductors in performance at NORDIC SOUNDS on May 13 at 7:30 pm at Pacific Spirit United Church (2205 West 45th Avenue).

Over the last 42 years, the Vancouver Chamber Choir has hosted an annual Conductors’ Symposium as one of its many educational and community outreach initiatives.

The Vancouver Chamber Choir’s Conductors’ Symposium is an opportunity for aspiring conductors to take part in masterclasses with one of Canada’s premier professional choral ensembles and is a way to pass down choral traditions and encourage growth and innovation in the next generation of  conductors.

This year’s event includes five invited participants from across North America: Raoul Carlo Angangco (Bloomington, IN); Maria Koebsch (Vancouver), Will McLean (Grapevine, TX); Samuel Sherman (Denver, CO); and Yvonne Usseni (Victoria, B.C.). Each participant will have the opportunity to work with Turunen and the choir on their choral techniques, conducting gestures, and score interpretation. At the end of the symposium, each conductor will showcase their accomplishments as they take the podium at NORDIC SOUNDS.

For this year’s symposium, Turunen has curated a selection of works that highlight Nordic culture and languages and that challenges this year’s participants in their development as conductors.

“NORDIC SOUNDS combines two things I love: choral music from the Nordic countries and mentoring the next generation of conductors,” Turunen  says. “It will be wonderful to follow these talented young conductors working with the Vancouver Chamber Choir on music that was formative to me in my youth. I think this is also a treat for the audience: fresh faces and wonderful music in all the Scandinavian languages.”
