VSO presents Day of Music with 100 free concerts on June 1
Pop-up performances take place all across downtown Vancouver and at YVR Airport
Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents Day of Music on June 1 from 10 am to 10 pm at various venues
IT’S MUSIC TO our ears: Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is once again offering its Day of Music, with 100 free performances throughout downtown Vancouver and at YVR Airport on June 1 between 10 am and 10 pm.
The pop-up concerts take place at the Orpheum, VSO School of Music, Christ Church Cathedral, Helmcken Plaza, TELUS Garden, Deloitte, and at the Jade Canoe at YVR Airport. There’s also a series of online workshops. For the complete rundown, see here.
It all kicks off with an open rehearsal at the Orpheum at 10 am with special guests Sinfonietta, a string ensemble, and violinist Yaming Zhu, the Future of Excellence winner.
The day wraps up with a free concert at the Orpheum at 8 pm conducted by VSO music director Otto Tausk. On the program are Mikhail Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmila; Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty: Suite, Op. 66a; selections from Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (New World); Klaus Badelt’s Pirates of the Caribbean (The Curse of the Black Pearl); Pablo de Sarasate’s Fantasy of Bizet’s “Carmen”, Op. 25; and Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird: Berceuse and Finale.
No tickets are required for any of the shows, but it’s recommended to arrive early to get the best seats.
Gail Johnson is a Vancouver-based journalist who has earned local and national nominations and awards for her work.
