Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony at the Orpheum from April 11 to 13

RUSSIAN-BORN CONDUCTOR Stanislav Kochanovsky, the celebrated leader of Hannover, Germany’s NDR Radiophilharmonie, will visit the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra this month to conduct a three-concert program.

Kochanovsky regularly conducts for organizations around the world, including the Orchestre de Paris, Rome’s Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, and beyond. He has been a regular guest at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland since 2017, and takes the podium for everything from operas and classical works to rarely heard pieces like Hungarian composer György Ligeti’s Requiem and Russian pianist Alexander Scriabin’s Prefatory Action.

At the Orpheum from April 11 to 13, Kochanovsky will lead the VSO through Rachmaninoff’s emotional Symphony No. 3, the composer’s last work and a globally beloved piece. The musicians will also perform Ravel’s movement “Une barque sur l’océan” from the composer’s Miroirs suite, and Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor alongside distinguished British-Australian piano soloist Stephen Hough.

Hough, the first classical musician to become a MacArthur Fellow, will host a VSO School of Music masterclass for advanced young pianists at Pyatt Hall on April 10. The general public is invited to watch; tickets are available here.
