Sound of Dragon Music Festival presents TAIWANESE MUSIC meets JAZZ on the YANGQIN on June 25 at the Annex Theatre

YAPING WANG is a composer from Taiwan who plays yangqin, or Chinese dulcimer, and whose music fuses everything from tango, jazz, and rock to electronic, Middle Eastern, and baroque.

The artist graduated from National Taiwan University of Arts as a yangqin major and received her master’s degree in composition from the State University of New York.As a composer, Wang has received commissions from The National Prehistoric Museum of Taiwan, Taipei Chinese Orchestra, Paris Chinese Film Festival, and Theatre de la ville Paris, to name a few. As an improviser, she has appeared at international music festivals throughout Europe and performs regularly in concerts for the French National Radio and at the Musée Guimet (National Asian Arts Museum).

Thanks to Sound of Dragon Music Festival, Wang is about to make her Canadian debut. Her solo work uses electronic processing and improvisation on the traditional Chinese hammered dulcimer, while her compositions for jazz trio—featuring Vancouver trumpeter John Korsrud and bassist Tommy Babin—are influenced by her Taiwanese musical roots. She will also perform a work by Vancouver composer Mark Armanini called “Scented Flowers” with harpist Albertina Chan and erhu player Lan Tung.

Wang also appears at the Song of Joy Music Jam at 3 pm on June 26 at the Annex, a free festival event.
